Here you will find: Artist-in-Residence descriptions UpcomingWorkshops Six-week Artist series
Artist in Residence Experiences I am pleased to talk with you about workshops for adults or youth at your location, including artist-in-residence opportunities. Groups can create individual projects or work together to create banners, quilts, etc. for installation in your school or home. (See photos from my latest residency.) Please call (207) 767-2024 for more information. Here are two sample descriptions:
Exploring Batik Have you ever seen a beautiful batik design and wished you could try your hand at it? Join batik artist Suzanne Drown to explore this fascinating and ancient art process. Participants will have the opportunity to create a one-color batik, which includes painting or drawing on fabric with melted wax, then using an immersion dying process. Images from nature and other cultures will provide the inspiration for the finished pieces.
Silk Resist Batik Using the colorful hues of fiber reactive dyes and sabra silk resist, create unique fabric that will make your fiber-based creation spectacular! Completed fabric can be used for fabric collage and embellishment, handmade books, pillow, wearables and more!
Sea Weed Marbling “Marbling” takes its name from the stone because some of the designs on marbled fabric resemble the veins and ripples in the marble stone. In marbling, paint is floated on top of water in a tray, and then drawing different tools through the paint creates the design. In this residency students would use various objects such as forks, chops sticks, tooth picks or corn holders. The thick syrupy water the paint is floated on is created by mixing a sea weed extract called carrageenan with the water and is the reason the process is called seaweed marbling. Students each created their own design in this way, then made their print by placing fabric on the paint-covered surface of the water.
